Day 7 (02-11-2009) : Madrid — Barcelona — Frankfurt — Prague
Ok, there’s nothing much to talk about the last day, because it was basically just waiting and travelling. On a sidenote, I spent a huge sum on transport alone. A total of EUR130 in just one week! Partly because I made it a round trip. I guess if I came back from Madrid, it would be a little bit cheaper! Haha. And time-saving as well!
I think many of you will ask now if I prefered travelling alone or with someone. Well, here are my feelings. When travelling alone, the benefit is that whatever you would like to do, or maybe to change the itinerary, or the places to visit, its all up to you, and if you felt like eating expensive or eating cheap sometimes, you don’t have to reach a compromise between the group. However, downside is that during travelling, there are always time when you are on the bus, or at the museum, and you would like to comment about something, there wasn’t anybody to hear that, sure you can talk to yourself and be seen as a mental patient. Haha. You are more likely and willing to open up to initiate conversation to people because you are alone too. Oh ya! one more thing, no travelling companions means no pictures of yourself unless 1) you set timer mode, 2) you get someone to take the picture for you, 3) you zi-pai.
But overall, I must say I enjoyed myself for the past week, it was really a relaxed trip, and I had everything planned out beautifully, so there was no trouble at all! 🙂 But I guess I have to stop travelling and rush out all my projects, else I can’t register for exams then will D*-B** (choy choy!).
The weird old man that was sleeping in the bed opposite mine had already checked out. As well as all the rest who were in the room; there was only me and 2 other Koreans left in the 12-bedder room. I had a small talk with both of them, they were in Europe for 3 weeks as a tour, starting from Prague. They shared my sentiments about Spain not being the usual European city and that it was very modern.
I didn’t set my alarm for the night and was only woken up when the 2 Koreans started talking. So we had breakfast together. The Brit and the 2 Italians that I spoke to briefly yesterday are leaving today as well!
Oh on a sidenote, if any of you are going to Madrid and are wondering where to stay, I highly reccommend staying at Los Amigos Sol Hostel. It’s near to the city centre, it’s clean and has good facilities, staff are friendly, common area and kitchen and rooms are all very cosy, and it’s one of the meeting place for the nightly pub-crawl! Did I mention? Breakfast is provided too! Nothing spectacular, but there’s milk, conflakes, bread, jam, butter, coffee, tea, and an occasional conversation! That’s enough for me 😛
After breakfast, made my way around town. Itinerary for today includes the bullring, El Retiro Park, Plaza de Colon.
Bullfighting originated from Spain, and Madrid hosts the most important bullring of the world. Although it is not the biggest (with a capacity of 24,000, it is only the 3rd biggest. Biggest is in Mexico), it is by far the most popular one. Mummy read from travel books in the library that entrance to the Museo Taurino was free, but in fact, it is only free after you go for the guided tour. But I enjoyed the guided tour simply because the group was small (there was only me and another couple) and the guide could explain many many things to us.
This bullring was constructed in 1929. Previously, before it was built, bullfights took place in Plaza Mayor. But it was not an ideal place because there was no seats for the specatators.
Each mosaic tile is individually hand painted, and there are names of the districts of the whole of Spain on them. This was to signify unity of all districts when it comes to bullfighting (according to my guide! HAHA)
Going around the circumference of the bullring, I wondered when we are gonna go in to see the ring, and just as my mind was thinking about this, the guide say “ok, NOW we will go in to see the place”. Such coincidence, or maybe he can read my mind. 😀
Out of the 24,000 seats available, 20,000 are seasoned seats, which means effectively every session, only 4000 seats are available effectively. In May when it is summer, bullfights occur everyday. Towards October, they are held every weekends. And now that I’m here, there are no bullfights (zzz. because it’s winter.) Tickets sold ranges from EUR4 to EUR150! and the bulls are slaughtered immediately after the fight, and usually there are many restaurants contacting the bullring master to purchase parts of the cow for business!
The bullfighters make the bulls run around, so that they will be tired and won’t have so much energy to retaliate later. The horses have to be blindfolded during this stage, because else, they would be so scared that they won’t even enter the ring. Also the yellow coat that you see the horse is wearing, it is made of bullet proof material to protect the horses from the sharp horns.
The bullfighters have a total of 6 such ‘arrows’ to pierce into the bull’s body. This is to make the bull bleed profusely but not kill it yet. Cruel aye, this sport!
A really interesting tour. Maybe some time later, I will come back to watch a live bull-fight, though I still feel its very very cruel. :S
And just outside the bull ring, on the main road, there were 3 women, of Gypsies race, going around offering to clean the windscreen of cars in exchange for some money. Very obviously, they are not very welcomed and everytime the traffic light turns green, they have to run for their lives. And when one of them saw me taking pictures of them cleaning the cars, she tried to shoo-ed me away, and of course I ran for my life, because the gypsies are … I don’t know what to say, sorta like the beggars of Europe la.
It was the potato omelette wrapped in oily bread with mayonaise and ketchup. Not bad. 🙂 Strolled to El Retiro, because Gerardo said it’s a must-see and the 2 Italian girls told me its really nice too!
The park is humongous with 1001 bronze statues around. It’s nice place for romantic walks. Maybe Gerardo always bring his girlfriend here. 😛
Found myself back at Plaza de Sol in no time. Nearby, a tourist bus stopped and people began coming down from the bus. They were Asians, so they caught my attention more. And when they began speaking, I knew at once that they were from Singapore, because they said “Ha gink, ha gink (Hurry Hurry), don’t waste time already!” The Singlish accent and familiarity brought a smile to my face, though I walked away after that. Into Museo de Jamon.
Jamon Serrano is what you would call the dozen pig legs dangling from the ceiling of a Spanish bar. The curing process of these meat basically involves leaving the leg of the slaughtered pig in sea salt for a few days, then removing the salt before hanging it up to mature, which may take from a few months to over two years, depending on the ham. Curing ‘seals’ the ham which is why they’re not covered with swarms of flies when you see them hanging in bars.
Jamon tasted like bak-kwa, just that it doesn’t have the sweet honey taste, and is not that thick. It is salty in fact! I think my brother will love it! Hahas..
I had nowhere else that I wanted to visit, plus I was very tired from all the walking, so I returned to the hostel to chill out in the common area, and to read the Lonely Planet books they had there. Saw two Tapas shop that was near Plaza de Sol, and I thought I will have one last tapas before my departure back to Frankfurt tomorrow.
And so begins my journey back ‘home’. 7hours by bus to Barcelona, 45mins by bus to Girona Airport, 2hours by plane to Frankfurt, 10hours waiting, last hour by plane to Prague. I don’t want to return to studying!!!
Had the best sleep for the past week. The bed was so warm and comfortable, and the hostel so clean. Woke up to a simple breakfast, nothing spectacular, just coffee, bread and cornflakes, but it was good! 🙂 Chatted with a few people over breakfast, 2 Italians, 1 British, 1 American, 2 Koreans. I like it!
Took a bus from Eliptic bus station to Toledo. And stupid me left my camera battery in the charger in the hostel locker. ZZZ. So no pictures of Toledo today. Those you see below are from the Internet. =/
Toledo is a city of bridges, gates, slopes, hidden lanes, and brown tiles. It’s one town that has churches, monasteries, synalogues and mosques altogether. Before you start thinking that all these religious buildings have different architecture, I must say that all of them look almost the same; the whole city is so brown, the houses are brown, the churches are brown, the bridges are brown, the monasteries are brown, the mosques are brown, the only things that are not brown are the vehicles.
So I was walking the whole day, and without my good friend the Casio camera, it was a little boring. Walked from Estacion de Autobuses (bus station) to Puente de Alcantara (Alcantara Bridge), from Mazquita del Cristo de la Luz (a mosque that existed before the Christian reconquest and preserved ever since) to Alcazar (the castle), from the Catedral to Sinagoga de Santa Maria La Blanca (a Jewish synalogue), from San Juan de los Reyes Monastery to a San Tome church (a church with doors hidden behind a curtain). So as you can see, there were so many different kinds of buildings over here. It’s a place where cultures which are so diverse meet and co-exist.
Went into one small cosy Restaurant for lunch, because there was a set meal of a starters, a main dish, water, bread and dessert for 10EUR, so for starters, I chose Paella (I mean since I was here in Spain right!), and for main dish, Codorniz a la Toledana (Toledana style quail with homemade chips). When the main dish came, I thought ah ok, so one small thigh of the quail. Prior to this, I only ate quail eggs before mah, although I know quails are like pigeons, they are small birds. Then I saw a small wing of the bird, and I thought to myself, hmms, where did this come from, and I looked more carefully at my dish right before my eyes. And I finally realised that it was the whole quail that was being cooked. At one point, I even almost ate it’s heart! ANd I’m not sure if it’s the way of cooking or if quail meat texture are all like this; it was quite hard and dry, even though it was cooked in sauce. And there were so many bones, it was like eating fish. Nice experience, but I think I won’t eat quail any more, just their eggs! Hahas..
Did so so much walking today and the past few days, that I think I will have a good night sleep tonight! 😛
Careless me forgot to jot down the address of the hostel that I booked. So I went to ask the information counter, if they know where it was. The lady at the counter did give me an address, but it was the old address of the hostel. zzz. After asking around, I managed to find it. But it had been raining the whole day! Bad weather! Left my bag at the luggage room and left because I wasn’t a registered guest at the hostel yet, so I can’t stay for long. Went into one cafe for hot coffee, since it was raining, and after walking just 10mins in the rain, my jeans were wet, my top was ok, because my jacket was waterproof. Then I saw people eating you-tiao! Haha, of course they were not you-tiao, but churros, they were deep fried doughnuts, but you know, they tasted and looked the same. So I wonder if churros was invented first or you-tiao.
Sat in the cafe for awhile until the rain was not so heavy.
Talking about prawns, I remembered one issue with Victor, a Spanish guy. When he saw the prawns that we bought from the Vietnamese market, (they were not cooked before frozen, so they were grey), and he commented, “Oh! They are not fresh right! They are black!” and I looked at him in astonishment, because coming from Spain, where half the country is facing the Mediterrean Sea, he said that! And now I know why he said that, because so far all the prawns that I see are cooked to pinkish orange before being frozen. Guess they do this so that it can be kept longer.
Today, there’s a match between Real Madrid FC and FC Barcelona, but at Barcelona. 😦 Though I’m not so much a football fan, but it would be great to soak up the atmosphere of two big clubs playing together! And Luca is gonna be one of the food caterer for the soccer players! How cool right!
Mummy told me to go to Chocolaterias San Gines to try it. And so happens that it is very near to the hostel! And I saw it while walking along the street just now. So I went, and there were so many people in it! Everybody is squeezing here and there! And I looked around to see what people ordered, just a chocolate and a plate of churros. They ate these like how we eat dou-jiang-you-tiao! You dip the churros in the thick chocolate! And the chocolate is so so thick that it is like melted chocolate, its not the kind of hot chocolate drink that you get in coffeehouses! Its so sinful and calories laden! But it was REALLY nice! And that was my dinner! hahas. I think its because its so thick, you fill up really fast!
Before I came, Ivan told me that I HAVE TO see Gaudi’s work, its like don’t say you have been to Czech Republic when you haven’t taste their beer! Haha.. So today, I went on an expedition to explore all of Gaudi’s works in Barcelona. A bit of background information for you if you do not know of his existence (just like me before. 😛 I guess if you are not in architecture or never planned to travel to Barcelona, you would never have heard of his name.)
SO, Antoni Gaudi was someone of the 19th century, he graduated as an architect, with these words from his professors: “I’m not sure if this is an architect who is graduating or a genius”. He gets his inspiration from Mother Nature, the geometry of animal, plant and mineral kingdoms.
The great book, always open and which we should make an effort to read, is that of Nature. -Antoni Gaudi
His works in Barcelona includes Parc Güell, the still unfinished Sagrada FamÃlia (which is a cathedral) and the houses; La Pedrera/Casa Milà and La Casa Batlló. I started with La Pedrera (mainly because it’s the nearest to the hostel I was staying in – but it was a good choice because it gave a background introduction to all his works in the exhibition, so I could better appreciate the rest of the architecture), and proceeded to La Sagrada FamÃlia, and then to Parc Güell.
And then after the permanent exhibits, I went on to the terrace. This unique roof was designed to fulfil a functional role. There are 3 types of constructions here: the badalots (staircases), the ventilation towers and the chimneys. Some are covered with trencadis (colourful broken pieces of ceramics) whereas those that are less visible from the street are only roughy painted.
And then, went down to the apartment sector of this building, where some royal family used to stay in.
Proxima Estacion: La Sagrada Familia
HOW COULD ANYONE DESIGNED A CHURCH LIKE THIS!!!
What is so special and different about this cathedral is that it is the only one in the world that allows visitors in even though it is still under construction. It is also the longest one to be built. Now, 300 civil engineers, brick layers and other architects are working as a team, so as to finish the interior by 2010 for mass session, and by 2030, it is projected that the whole project would be completed, in Gaudi’s wish and design.
I’m glad that I am studying Civil Engineering, because they were talking about how the arches diameter and the area of columns all affect how much weight it can support, which is what I learnt in Concrete structures and Steel structures. OK, I know it’s general knowlegde that of course, they will affect the weight supported, but I learn about the calcultation and the limit states ok! Haha.
Parc Güell next! But along the way, I saw…
Arranged yesterday with Luca to meet for dinner, and he can suggest a good restaurant for Tapas! But at 8pm, he messaged me telling me he felt anti-social that night! So I went for dinner along La Ramblas, not the best place, because its touristy, and its not guaranteed good. But there was some discount going on! 2 Tapas + 1 Paella for EUR9.95!
YUMYUM!!! But maybe it can taste better. Haha.. I don’t know. And I ran along to catch my 7hours bus to Madrid. Good night!
Day 2 (27-11-2009) : Frankfurt Hahn Airport — Girona Costa Brava Airport — Barcelona
Woke up around 4.30am in the morning because I could not sleep anymore. Too much sleep and too uncomfortable. Haha, plus I didn’t want to miss the plane. Mummy sent me a wake-up message but I told her a was already at the departure gate! 😛
The staffs at the departure gate were really strict about the weight of the luggage, many people who had luggage weighing more than 10kg were asked to pay 35EUR to check-in their luggage! So I was afraid that mine would be heavier than 10kg, I took my bag of cables and chargers out of my bag, and hid them in my jacket. The bag weighed 8.4kg, phew! And I saw this group of Chinese girl from University of Mannhelm, so I asked if they knew Terrence or Jasmine or YanLin, since they are on exchange there as well. And one of the girls said she know of a Singaporean guy, but is not sure if he is Terrence because that guy only told her his Chinese name.
The plane arrived 20mins before the expected time, and as always, there was the sound of the trumpet and the anouncement. And Girona Airport is much nicer than Frankfurt Hahn! hahas.. Took the bus to go to…
But I still ate my Kinder Bueno on the bus. 😛 and when I woke up from my deep slumber on the bus, I was shocked for 3 seconds, because Barcelona looked ssoo much like Singapore! (maybe I’m just missing Singapore too much HAHA). Luca (Ajda’s Italian friend who stays in Barcelona) called me just as I reached Barcelona Nord Station, so we arranged to meet and he brought me around the whole place! Nice guy, ‘small and cute’ in Ajda’s words. But when I told Luca that Ajda said that, he said he would box her! HAHA..
And then we were walking around Ciutat Vella, around all the winding streets, hidden squares, and small roads.
And then I said to Luca to bring me to the beach, so he suggested that he could go back home to get his skateboard and I could cycle with the free bicycle. Luca had been skating since he was very young, and he moved to Barcelona 5 years ago because of skating, and because he could continue to skate in winter as it wasn’t so cold here in Barcelona. Skating brought him to many places, like Berlin, Kuala Lumpur, and all other places, and he finally decided to stay in Barcelona. He told me he’s 32 years old and I was like “WHAT?’ because seriously, I thought he was just around 26.
It was around 5pm and Luca said he had to go to attend his Kungfu lessons, so I thanked him for his company and explored the rest of the city by myself.
From there, as the sky begins to turn yellow and dark, everywhere had a different view! I walked further to Montjuïc Castle, which was quoted as the castle between the city and the sea. Quite scary to walk up the deserted streets with dim light. But I kept a conscious look-out for anything suspicious. Plus I didn’t have a figure to lust for. 😛
Had a bit of beer with Luca again, though he admit that he is one who don’t drink alot. So we each just drank one mug. Then time to sleep!
Day 1 (26-11-2009) : Frankfurt Hahn Airport — Emmelshausen
So I woke up at 8am in the morning, and went to the information counter to ask if they know of anywhere nearby where I could do some hiking or cycling. And the lady told me about Emmelshausen. So I decided that would be my plan for the day, to catch the first bus there, and the last bus back, and continue to sleep in the airport tonight.
The night before it was raining, and everytime the automatic door opened, cold air rushed in into the airport interior and made my hair stood up. Luckily I brought my hoodie and my winter jacket and my scarf along! 😛
The bus ride took about 40mins to get to Emmelshausen, and I was really excited to do my hiking, like just walking through some forest or something.
I didn’t find any nice forest in the city for me to walk, just some small nature reserve. And plus it was raining, sian… So I went on a quest to explore all the houses in this small town. The place was really clean and people there was generally very friendly. It was something different from the experience in Prague, not that the Czechs are unfriendly, but just, d.i.f.f.e.r.e.n.t. And I wouldn’t mind moving to a small town like this! It was small but everybody in there was well-to-do, because they were driving Mercedes and Audi and Opel and Mazda.
Finished looking at all the houses in this small town (you can imagine how SMALL this town is) and then I thought ok, so time to explore the forest now. HAHA.. It was a little scary to walk in that forest. Even though it was small, and there are paths, but there were no signs at all to mark the routes! And all the trees look the same (like duh! haha.. maybe the trees think that all humans look the same as well).
Had a huge Doner Kebab for dinner, and went back to the airport. Did some Concrete Structures work for Task2 which I was supposed to hand up already, and went to sleep really early. Because I didn’t wanna miss my flight to Barcelona, else I would be stuck in this boring airport for one whole week with nothing to do.
Day 0 (25-11-2009) : Prague — Frankfurt Hahn Airport
So after a simple dinner in Sinkule, I took my bag and bidded goodbye to everybody and headed for the airport. I was on my way to Frankfurt and then to Spain. At that time, I had the feeling as if I was heading back to Singapore already, and that I would be leaving everybody who have been my friends for the past 3months. But I think this one week of independent travelling would allow me to learn more about myself. Many people whom I told that I would be travelling alone, asked me why and if I prefered to travel alone, and to all, I replied, “I’m not sure if I would like to do it, but its my first time, so after this trip, I’ll know.” But Mummy is right, I am afraid of loneliness, I have to talk to people and I cannot stay alone for more than 98724seconds.
It was quite a small plane, and the funny thing was that once it reached the destination, there was this sound clip with the trumpet blowing, and saying “CONGRATULATIONS, this is yet another flight that reached on time or before time. Nearly 95% of all RYANAIR flights are early. We strive to bring you quality flights at a low cost!”
Just that I couldn’t sleep very well, because my jeans were not too comfortable, and I can’t lie down on the floor because I don’t have a sleeping bag, and the chairs are not too comfortable. So I woke up almost every hour to readjust myself and make sure that my bag was still with me. =/
I’m 24hours away from the flight to Frankfurt and then to Barcelona! Wait for all my interesting updates of these three (Madrid as well!) places! Meanwhile I will have to try and finish my Concrete Task 2. And in case you missed my previous post about how dirt cheap the airticket is: the return ticket from Prague-Frankfurt is 0.02Kc and the return ticket from Frankfurt-Barcelona is 10EUR! HAHA 😛
